Today is a day of joy, of rejoicing. This Gospel speaks to those who have wondered, doubted, or felt the weight of uncertainty. Amid the many religions and beliefs in the world, and as Christmas draws near, distractions and skepticism abound. Some mock or reject the faith, thriving in worldly ways, while Christ’s followers often struggle. Yet today, the question, “Are You the Coming One, or do we look for another?” is answered. John the Baptist, from prison, sends his disciples to Jesus with this question—not because he doubted, but so they might know the truth for themselves. John, the Forerunner of Christ, already knew Jesus was the Christ, as foretold by prophets and affirmed at Jesus’ baptism. Even before his birth, John leaped in his mother’s womb, filled with the Holy Spirit, eager to proclaim Christ. Jesus answers, “The blind see, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, the dead are raised, and the Gospel is preached to the poor.” These works are the very marks of the Messiah—the Christ, recorded in Scripture; by them, we know Jesus, Almighty God in the flesh is the Coming One. Though His path was marked by weakness and opposition, still, He is the promised Saviour. Let us set aside all doubt, trust His mercy, and rejoice in His Word and Sacraments. Behold, Jesus, the Lamb of God, is the Coming One; He comes for us and for our salvation.
