The end is near, nearer now than ever before: that’s the message of Advent, for just as surely as Christ Jesus came in all humility, so will He come again with power and great glory. It could be that He comes this very day. Or, it might be tomorrow or next week or before Christmas. He may tarry and come long after you have fought the good fight, finished the race, and kept the faith. Nevertheless, He shall come. You’ve been warned in advance. Behold the signs pointing to the Lord Jesus’ imminent return, signs in the sun, moon, and stars, and the signs upon the earth: distress of nations, the sea and the waves roaring, together earthquakes, famines, pestilence, and all manner of fearful sights. Note them, Beloved, yet do not let your heart falter from fear. On the contrary, look up: lift up your heads, because your redemption draws near. Look up, for indeed it is here already. Behold the incarnate God who, in all humility, was born in a lowly stable, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. Behold the Victorious One who rose from the dead on Easter morn, ascended into heaven forty days later, and now sits at the Right Hand of His Father. Behold the Lord Jesus, who comes humbly, even now, among you in His Word and blessed Sacraments to comfort you, remind you that He has purchased and redeemed you, and strengthen you now and until either your last day or the Last Day.
