Let the destruction of Jerusalem in A.D. 70 serve as a warning, a wake-up call: that God’s Word should never be treated lightly or with contempt. Now is the day of salvation. O, thanks be to God that the grace of God has yet to run out for you. Therefore, repent of your lack of fear, love, and trust in God; repent of your failing to call upon Him in every trouble, of your lackluster prayers, praise, and thanksgiving; repent of despising His Word and gifts. Repent before it’s too late! Still, repentance, in itself, is not enough; it’s never enough. What you must know is the day of your visitation and the things—the only things—that make for your peace. What are they? Jesus, the only-begotten Son of God, dying on the Cross for your sins and rising from the dead for your justification; the washing of water and the Word that is Holy Baptism; the Word of Absolution that Jesus speaks to you through His called and ordained servants; the true Body and Blood of Jesus, under bread and wine, distributed to you from this very altar: these are the things—the only things—that bring you peace.
