Despite Peter’s denials of Him and our, likewise, denials of Him, Jesus goes to His Passion and death to be wounded for our transgressions. He carried those denials to His death. More than that, though our Lord despises death, He did not fear it. He came into this world to overcome death, to let it devour Him so that He could remove its sting and the fear that it evokes by breaking its bonds and setting His people free from its slavery and from its masters: sin and the devil. Knowing that His perfect sacrifice would fully cover and atone for sin, Jesus did not fear death, for He knew that His Father would accept His sacrifice, and so, death would neither be the end of Him nor of anyone united to Him in faith.
