Sermon for the Wednesday of Oculi, 2024

The Jewish leaders questioned Jesus’ authority concerned with what He was preaching and teaching, as though it sounded strange to them or contrary in some way; they asked Him this to entrap Him. Still, their question is a good one; more than that, it’s good to know that Jesus has the authority to preach the Gospel. Because the Gospel He preaches—and which His true ministers preach—is the good news of the love of God manifested in the giving of His beloved Son, thereby reconciling Himself to mankind in the suffering, death, and resurrection of Christ Jesus. Trust that Christ Jesus has the authority to lay down His life and take it up again and, thereby, make satisfaction for sin, and, more than that, trust that He has the authority to bestow the benefits of His sacrifice to you.
