The miracle of the Annunciation is more than a historic event. By the account of St. Luke, by the testimony of the Evangelist, you hear the proclamation of the angel, you hear Mary’s response of faith. And you have hope. Because: you were not conceived without sin; you were begotten of a human father and born to a human mother. And so, to you, the curse applies. In pain, your mother bore you. And like Cain, and, indeed, all of Adam’s descendants, the fruits of your sin have caused sorrow to those around you. For the sin you inherited has been manifest in you. Yet more than harming those around you, your sin has separated you from God.
So, for you, the angel’s words bring special comfort. Do not be afraid, for in the Son of Mary you have found favor with God. It is not you who will die for your sins. Christ has already done that. For the shadow of the Cross falls upon the manger: His holy incarnation was for your salvation.
By the powerful, creative Word was the Christ conceived. And by that Word are you delivered from death. The One born of Mary reigns over a Kingdom that has no end. And because He was conceived for you, born for you, died for you, and rose for you, He makes that Kingdom yours. Do not be afraid, Beloved.
